During a pivotal moment in the NBA playoff game between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Phoenix Suns, referee Zach Zarba was seen exchanging a handshake with Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards.
This occurred right after Edwards made a crucial block against Suns guard Bradley Beal, with the Timberwolves slightly ahead 64-63 in the third quarter of their Game 2 matchup in the Western Conference first round at the Target Center, Minneapolis.
The exchange caught attention as it’s unusual for referees, who are expected to maintain neutrality, to show such gestures to players during a game.

Some of Edwards’ teammates appeared surprised by the interaction.
Despite struggling with his shooting, scoring only 9 points on 1-of-7 from the field, Edwards made a significant impact defensively. He also recorded a steal against Suns guard Royce O’Neale in the previous possession.
Following the block, the Timberwolves capitalized on the momentum, going on an 8-0 run and finishing the third quarter up 78-71. They ultimately won the game 105-93, taking a 2-0 series lead over the Suns.
