Basketball Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas is sharing a personal health challenge he’s been facing. Speaking on a recent episode of Mark Jackson’s podcast, “Come And Talk 2 Me,” the former NBA superstar revealed that he has been diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy, a neurological condition that causes weakness or paralysis in the muscles on one side of the face.
Thomas explained that the condition has led to visible drooping in his mouth and facial muscles.
“I’ve gotten a lot of love from people saying, ‘Well, Isiah’s sick. What is he going through?’” Thomas said. “I haven’t really told anybody, but I’ve got Bell’s Palsy … That’s why you see me like this. I appreciate the prayers and the love. That’s what’s happening with my mouth right now. I just wanted everyone to know that.”
Bell’s Palsy is often temporary and can range from mild to severe. While the exact cause is not always known, the condition is typically linked to inflammation or viral infections affecting the facial nerve. Recovery times vary, but many individuals experience significant improvement with time and treatment.
Thomas, now 63 years old, is a two-time NBA champion and 12-time All-Star who played for the Detroit Pistons from 1981 to 1994. Known for his leadership during the Pistons’ “Bad Boys” era, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000.

More recently, he’s been active in basketball commentary, working with networks like NBA TV and TNT. Thomas also served as an advisor to Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia, reflecting his continued influence in the sport.
The revelation about his health underscores Thomas’s resilience both on and off the court. His openness about Bell’s Palsy is also likely to raise awareness about the condition and its impact, as fans continue to offer support to one of basketball’s enduring icons.
