Stetson Bennett, the Los Angeles Rams’ quarterback, recently opened up about his time away from football, emphasizing his focus on mental well-being during the hiatus.
In Thousand Oaks, California, Bennett shared his excitement about returning to the field after stepping back prior to the last season.
Bennett, a two-time national champion with the University of Georgia, joined the Rams as a fourth-round draft pick following his second national title in January 2023.
He quickly integrated into the team, participating in offseason organized team activities and preseason games while competing to become Matthew Stafford’s backup under head coach Sean McVay.

However, Bennett’s journey with the Rams was unexpectedly paused before the regular season began, and he did not return in 2023.
When asked about his absence, Bennett explained,
“I was home. The particulars of what happened and why I left will remain internal discussions. Thankfully, Les (Snead) and Coach McVay were supportive when I went back home.”
He confirmed that his departure was related to mental health, stating, “Yeah, I’d say that.”
During his time off, Bennett maintained communication with the Rams’ coaching staff and was determined to make a comeback.
Reflecting on his return to the team this spring, he admitted,
“A lot of nerves that first day. It hasn’t been seamless, but it’s been improving day by day, as you hope it would.”
Last season, the Rams’ backup quarterback role was filled by Brett Rypien, who struggled during his tenure, especially in Stafford’s absence due to injury.
The team subsequently signed Carson Wentz, who played significantly in the final regular-season game as Stafford rested for the playoffs.
In the current year, the Rams have signed experienced NFL quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo as Stafford’s backup.
Despite this, Bennett remains hopeful and continues to practice with the team, aiming to secure a position.
Bennett expressed his joy in returning to football, saying,
“Getting back to football has been amazing. It’s what I love to do.”
Garoppolo, however, is set to serve a two-game suspension at the start of the season due to an issue with his therapeutic use exemption application for an unnamed substance.
This situation could potentially open up more opportunities for Bennett to prove himself within the team.
