The mother of the young girl severely injured in a 2021 crash involving former Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Britt Reid expresses her dissatisfaction over his sentence being commuted.
Reid, son of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, had pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated causing bodily injury in September 2022, receiving a three-year prison sentence. However, he won’t serve any time behind bars.
The accident left six people injured, including then-five-year-old Ariel Young, who suffered a traumatic brain injury, spent 11 days in a coma, and endured two months in the hospital.
Felicia Miller, Young’s mother, voiced her thoughts to ESPN’s Xuan Thai, breaking her silence on the matter.
We didn’t get (any) justice,” Felicia Miller told ESPN’s Xuan Thai.
“We went to court, we [were] told, you’re going to get justice,” Miller said in her first comments since the commutation. “He’s put away for a year and about three months. So we didn’t get [any] justice. It’s not enough.
“I know they say sometimes you have to forgive and forget to move on,” said Miller. “But looking at my baby every day and seeing my daughter, how she has to live, and then seeing how he could be back at home, comfortable.”
Reflecting on the situation, Miller expressed frustration over Reid’s lack of accountability, fearing that leniency would only perpetuate his irresponsible behavior.
“He keeps getting away with it,” she lamented. “If you keep letting someone off the hook, they’ll keep doing it.”
Reid will now serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until October 31, 2025. Miller emphasized her belief that if the roles were reversed, the outcome would have been drastically different, lamenting the apparent disparity in justice.
Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, a longtime Chiefs season ticket-holder, was responsible for shortening Reid’s prison sentence. The incident occurred when Reid collided with two vehicles near Arrowhead in February 2021. His blood alcohol content was 0.113, and he was driving 84 mph in a 65 mph zone at the time.
Young sustained life-threatening injuries, including severe traumatic brain injury, fractures, and contusions, according to court documents.
Reid was a linebackers coach for the Chiefs at the time and was released from the team shortly after the crash.
