As Opening Day arrives, it’s no surprise that Wander Franco won’t be taking the field for the Tampa Bay Rays anytime soon. ESPN’s Jeff Passan recently provided an update on Franco’s status with the team.
According to Passan, Franco has been placed on administrative leave through June 1, as part of an agreement between MLB and the MLB Players Association. His status may evolve pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. Currently, Franco is not listed on the Rays’ 40-man roster.
The investigation stems from allegations regarding Franco’s involvement with a 14-year-old girl, which led to his arrest in the Dominican Republic during the 2023 offseason. This situation casts a shadow over Franco’s lucrative 11-year, $182 million extension signed with the Rays back in 2021.
Last August, Franco was initially placed on paid administrative leave. Prior to his absence, he showcased promising performance, batting .281 with 17 homers and 58 RBIs during the 2023 season.
Rays manager Kevin Cash briefly addressed Franco’s absence in February, emphasizing the need to focus on the players present. However, he refrained from making any elaborate statements regarding the situation.
As the uncertainty looms over Franco’s future in MLB, the Rays are gearing up to kick off their 2024 season against the Blue Jays on Thursday. Despite Franco’s absence, the team remains focused on starting the season strong.
