An MLB relief pitcher is set to be sidelined for at least two months following an emotional outburst on Saturday.
Chicago Cubs righthander Colten Brewer punched a wall at Wrigley Field after exiting the team’s 7-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. As a result, Brewer fractured his left (non-throwing) hand and has been placed on the 60-day injured list.
In response to Brewer’s injury, the Cubs have recalled Hunter Bigge from Triple-A to take his place on the roster. Bigge has been impressive in the minors this season, posting a 1.32 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 13.2 innings across three different minor league levels in 2024.

Brewer’s season with the Cubs has been a struggle. In 15 appearances, he has recorded a 5.66 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP, with 22 strikeouts over 20.2 innings. His latest outing against the Angels saw him surrender three runs (one earned) on two hits, two walks, and a hit by pitch. This marked the fourth time in his last five appearances that he allowed at least one run, leading to his frustration boiling over and resulting in the injury.
The Cubs, currently mired in a slump, have lost 10 of their last 15 games and hold a 41-49 record, placing them in last place in the NL Central. Since May 22, the team has struggled with a 14-27 record.
The weekend series between the Angels and Cubs has been competitive, with each team winning one game. The rubber match is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. ET on Sunday.
As the Cubs continue to navigate a challenging season, Brewer’s absence will undoubtedly be felt in their bullpen. The team hopes that Hunter Bigge can bring some stability and success as they aim to turn their season around.
