Mike Vrabel, a respected figure in the NFL coaching landscape and the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year, is emerging as one of the most sought-after candidates in the upcoming coaching cycle. After parting ways with the Tennessee Titans following the 2023 season, Vrabel, 49, has spent this year as a coaching and personnel consultant with the Cleveland Browns.
Now, speculation is mounting that he could return to the New England Patriots—this time as their head coach.
The Patriots, who are enduring a dismal 3-13 season under first-year head coach Jerod Mayo, appear poised for significant changes.
Mayo, who succeeded legendary coach Bill Belichick, has struggled mightily, with the team’s latest setback being a humiliating 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The defeat marked their sixth consecutive loss, intensifying calls for a change at the helm.
A Perfect Fit for New England?
Mike Vrabel’s name has surfaced prominently as a potential replacement for Mayo. A former Patriots linebacker and three-time Super Bowl champion with the team, Vrabel has a deep connection to the franchise and owner Robert Kraft. Patriots beat writer Chad Graff of The Athletic has advocated for the move, noting that Vrabel’s ties to the organization and his proven track record make him an ideal candidate.
“All signs point to Mike Vrabel having interest in the Patriots job,” Graff wrote. “There’s no guarantee most years that other free-agent coaches would have any interest in the Patriots. But Vrabel would. He could return to the franchise where he became a three-time Super Bowl champion as a driving force of the first dynasty. And, importantly, he has a good relationship with Kraft.”
Kraft’s admiration for Vrabel was evident last year when the Patriots owner honored him during the Titans’ bye week. Kraft rolled out the red carpet for Vrabel, inducting him into the Patriots Hall of Fame and hosting him in a gesture that some in Tennessee reportedly found excessive. The gesture, however, highlighted Vrabel’s enduring significance to the Patriots organization.
A Proven Leader
During his tenure with the Titans, Vrabel compiled a 54-45 record, highlighted by three consecutive playoff appearances from 2019 to 2021. In 2019, he led Tennessee to the AFC Championship Game, and in 2021, the Titans earned the AFC’s No. 1 seed. Known for his disciplined approach and ability to get the best out of his players, Vrabel quickly became one of the NFL’s most respected coaches.
His availability now, paired with the Patriots’ struggles under Mayo, presents a unique opportunity for New England to bring a familiar face back into the fold.

Decision Time for the Patriots
The Patriots close out their regular season next week against the Buffalo Bills. With the team out of playoff contention and facing an uncertain future, all eyes will be on Kraft to see if he decides to bring Vrabel back to Foxborough.
For Vrabel, the chance to return to the organization where he achieved so much as a player could be too enticing to pass up. As the Patriots seek to rebuild and restore their status as perennial contenders, Vrabel’s leadership and connection to the franchise could make him the perfect choice to lead them into a new era.
