Michigan is set to appoint Sherrone Moore, the current offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, as their new head coach, as per sources informed ESPN’s Chris Low.
The coaching vacancy arose after Jim Harbaugh reportedly secured a five-year deal to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers. Harbaugh, who led the Wolverines to their first national title since 1997, served as Michigan’s head coach for the past nine seasons, amassing an 89-25 record.
“We are working quickly to hire the next head coach for the program and will do everything possible to keep this current staff and team together,” AD Warde Manuel said Wednesday.
Moore previously stepped in as the Wolverines’ interim coach for four games during Harbaugh’s suspensions amid NCAA investigations. Despite facing challenges, Moore led Michigan to victories over East Carolina, UNLV, Penn State, and arch-rival Ohio State, securing the program’s third consecutive Big Ten title.

Joining Michigan in 2018 as the tight ends coach, Moore ascended to co-offensive coordinator in 2021, concurrently overseeing the offensive line. Assuming the role of offensive coordinator in 2023, he played a pivotal role in Michigan’s rise to the nation’s No. 14 scoring offense, averaging 35.9 points per game.
Furthermore, Moore enjoys strong support from returning players for the 2024 season, with offensive lineman Zak Zinter expressing confidence in Moore’s leadership with a post on X: “No interviews needed. It’s Papa Moore’s time.” The announcement coincides with the NCAA’s provision allowing Michigan players a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal following Harbaugh’s departure, as per ON3’s Chandler Vessels.
