Michael Strahan has provided an update on his future with ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) and Fox NFL Sunday, while also sharing insights into his family life and recent personal milestones. The former New York Giants star sat down for an interview alongside his 20-year-old daughter, Isabella, who has recently revealed that she is now cancer-free after a challenging battle with a brain tumor.
Strahan, 52, and Isabella are featured on the cover of the latest issue of Town & Country Magazine. During the interview, Isabella spoke candidly about her journey after being diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumor, in January.
She described the challenges she faced throughout treatment, which included three surgeries, six weeks of radiation, and four rounds of chemotherapy. Thankfully, she is now cancer-free and on the path to recovery.
For Michael Strahan, his daughter’s health journey has been a time of immense growth and reflection. He shared his thoughts on the experience, acknowledging the strength it has brought to their family. “It’s been a crazy year,” Strahan said. “There were times when we said, ‘We know it’s painful and tough, but it’s temporary.’
The last year is one we hope to forget, but at the same time, it’s shown us a lot of important things about who she is and about who we are, and about how we show up for each other as a family.”
Strahan also discussed his future on television, revealing that retirement has been on his mind for some time. “I’ve always had those thoughts,” he admitted. “It will happen at some point. It’s not happening anytime soon. The kids are still in school. I’m empty-nesting again.”
Strahan shared that he has enjoyed the noise and energy of having his children around, but he is also looking forward to seeing Isabella return to college and reclaim her independence. “I want her to have that sense of independence again because my kids can’t grow if they’re under my shade,” he explained.
Though Strahan made it clear that retirement isn’t imminent, he hinted that it might be closer than many people expect. “I’m not planning on retiring anytime soon,” he said, “but at some point, I will retire, and I’d like to say a lot sooner than a lot of people probably think I will.”
He emphasized that when the time comes, his decision will be driven by his desire to spend more time with his family. “When I do it, it will be because I just want to have the freedom to be with [Isabella] and her sister, and her other sister and brother,” Strahan said. “Wherever they are, whatever they’re doing, I want to be there.”
Strahan has been a full-time host of Good Morning America since 2016, following his time as co-host of Live with Kelly and Michael alongside Kelly Ripa from 2012 to 2016. In addition to his work on GMA, Strahan has been an NFL analyst for Fox Sports since 2008.
His successful transition from the football field to television has made him one of the most recognizable personalities in the sports and entertainment industries.
Michael Strahan retired from the NFL in 2008 after an impressive 15-year career with the New York Giants, culminating in a Super Bowl victory during his final season.
Since then, he has continued to build a successful career in television while raising his family. Recently, Strahan has also embraced the role of a grandfather, as his oldest daughter, Tanita, gave birth to a son last month.
Reflecting on this new chapter, Strahan said, “Now I work, but I see an end to that because I want to spend time with my family. It’s the most important thing. I love that my girls are in college, and I have the ability to go and spend time with them.”
Family has always been at the core of Strahan’s life, and he is looking forward to dedicating more time to his loved ones in the future.
Strahan shares his children with his two former wives. He had his oldest daughter, Tanita, and son, Michael Jr., with his first wife, Wanda Hutchins. He also has twin daughters, Isabella and Sophia, with his second wife, Jean Muggli.
As a devoted father and now a grandfather, Strahan’s focus remains on being there for his family and supporting them in every way possible.
