The Porter brothers have experienced a particularly challenging month.
In a recent legal development, Coban Porter, younger sibling of Denver Nuggets star Michael Porter Jr., was sentenced to six years in prison by a Colorado court.
This sentencing follows his guilty plea to two felony charges in Denver District Court earlier this February, stemming from a tragic incident where he was involved in a fatal drunk driving crash near the DU campus in 2023.
The crash resulted in the death of 42-year-old Katharina Rothman. After a lengthy hearing, the judge decided that the six-year term for vehicular homicide and a concurrent two-year term for vehicular assault would be followed by a mandatory three-year parole period.

Additionally, several other charges, including vehicular homicide-reckless driving and vehicular assault-reckless, were dismissed as part of a plea agreement that capped his maximum sentence at eight years, significantly less than the potential 24 years he faced if the case had gone to trial.
Compounding the family’s troubles, Jontay Porter, another Porter brother and a player for the Toronto Raptors, has been banned from the NBA. This decision came after an investigation determined he manipulated his performance in games for betting purposes. ESPN reported that the NBA had been examining irregular betting patterns in two games on January 26 and March 20, which ultimately were linked back to Jontay, marking these as substantial betting events.
These series of events have cast a shadow over the Porter family during this period.
