The San Francisco 49ers have received an important update regarding the status of their star running back, Christian McCaffrey, who has yet to play during the 2024-25 NFL season due to a significant injury. McCaffrey’s absence has been a major setback for the 49ers, who had high hopes of contending for the Super Bowl this year.
Without him, the team has struggled with inconsistency, managing a 3-3 record so far, though they secured a 36-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football.
McCaffrey, 28, has been dealing with a serious injury issue: bilateral Achilles tendonitis, which affects both of his legs. This condition has caused ongoing pain and limited his ability to play, forcing the 49ers to shut him down after the season opener against the New York Jets, when his Achilles flared up again. His injuries have been so severe that he had to fly to Germany to consult with a specialist in hopes of addressing the recurring problem.
Despite these challenges, the 49ers received some positive news about McCaffrey’s potential return. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, McCaffrey is targeting a comeback in early November. If all goes well, his return could provide a massive boost to the 49ers’ offense, which has been led by quarterback Brock Purdy in McCaffrey’s absence. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and the team are eagerly awaiting his return, as his presence would transform the offense and give them a better shot at making a deep playoff run.
Fellow NFL insider Albert Breer provided further insight into McCaffrey’s recovery process. Breer explained that McCaffrey had started feeling better in August and was ramping up for the season opener. However, after his Achilles issues flared up again, the team made the tough decision to shut him down to prevent further damage.
“Going back to August, when he started to feel like himself again, they ramped him up toward the opener against the Jets,” Breer said. “Ultimately, the Achilles flared up on him, so after the opener, they wound up shutting him down. He just started feeling like himself again last week, so they’ve been ramping him up over the last few days.”

The good news, according to Breer, is that McCaffrey’s condition has stabilized. “There’s been no flare-ups, no setbacks. He feels good. The Niners are optimistic about where he is, but it’s still a scary situation for him. He’s determined to play this year, but I’d say the next two or three weeks are critical.”
McCaffrey is not only one of the most dynamic players in the NFL, but also a three-time Pro Bowler who was integral to the 49ers’ success last year. In the 2023 season, McCaffrey led the NFL with 1,459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, while also contributing as a receiver with 67 catches for 564 yards and seven touchdowns.
His dual-threat capabilities make him an invaluable asset for the 49ers’ offense, which has struggled to maintain consistency without him.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan, who relies heavily on McCaffrey’s versatility, emphasized the importance of protecting the running back from rushing back too soon. “We have to protect Christian from himself,” Shanahan said. “He doesn’t like to ever come out no matter what the situation is.”
As McCaffrey continues his recovery, the 49ers are hopeful that his early November return will reinvigorate their playoff aspirations. For now, all eyes are on his progress, as the next few weeks will determine if one of the NFL’s best running backs can make a comeback this season.
