Magic Johnson has added one of the nation’s highest civilian honors to his long list of accolades. On Saturday, the basketball legend and philanthropist was one of 19 recipients of the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in a ceremony held at the White House. Among the other honorees were soccer star Lionel Messi, actor Denzel Washington, U2 frontman Bono, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
A Humble Response from Magic
Following the ceremony, Johnson took to social media to share his heartfelt reaction.
“I am so humbled and overwhelmed with emotion right now,” Johnson wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “It is an absolute honor and privilege that President Joe Biden selected me for the esteemed Presidential Medal of Freedom award. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that this kid from Lansing, Mich., would one day grow up and receive one of the highest civilian awards of the United States.”
He continued with a promise of continued dedication:
“… I accept this honor with a deep sense of responsibility. It serves as a reminder of the work still ahead and the change we can all help bring about! I promise to keep working to make a positive difference for our country and the world.”

Honoring Legacy and Impact
The White House described the Presidential Medal of Freedom as an award given to individuals who have made “exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors.”
Magic Johnson’s selection is a testament not only to his legendary basketball career, which includes five NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers, but also to his enduring impact off the court. Johnson has been a trailblazer in business, HIV/AIDS advocacy, and community development for decades.
A Legacy Beyond Basketball
Since publicly revealing his HIV diagnosis in 1991, Johnson has dedicated his life to raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding the disease. His work with the Magic Johnson Foundation has provided HIV education, testing, and resources to underserved communities. Beyond health advocacy, Johnson has also been a leader in business, with investments in urban development, movie theaters, Starbucks franchises, and professional sports teams.
A Star-Studded Ceremony
The ceremony brought together a diverse array of honorees who have made significant contributions across various fields. President Biden highlighted the collective impact of the recipients, calling them “extraordinary Americans” who embody the values of courage, dedication, and innovation.
Building on a Tradition
This isn’t the first time President Biden has honored athletes with the Medal of Freedom. Previous recipients during his administration include Olympic champions Simone Biles, Megan Rapinoe, and Katie Ledecky. Johnson joins this elite group of sports figures recognized for their contributions to society beyond their athletic achievements.
Looking Ahead
As Johnson continues to inspire through his work, this latest recognition serves as a reminder of the profound impact he has made both on and off the court. From his basketball legacy to his philanthropic efforts, Magic Johnson remains a shining example of resilience, leadership, and service.
