In a recent interview with USA Today, LSU basketball player Angel Reese affectionately referred to Shaquille O’Neal as a “father figure.”
Drawing parallels between their personalities, LSU assistant coach Bob Starkey, who has coached both Shaq and Reese during his tenure, emphasized their shared love for people, enthusiasm for life, and strong ties to the school.
Reese clarified that she doesn’t see Shaq as a role model or basketball mentor but described their relationship as light and airy. She mentioned instances of Shaq providing business advice, and she jokingly roasts him if spotted with a woman.
They’ve built a bond so strong, Reese told USA TODAY Sports, she doesn’t consider O’Neal a basketball mentor or a celebrity acquaintance but rather “a father figure.” Whenever she walks at Senior Day, she plans to ask him to join her, an honor typically reserved for family members.
Reese plans to have Shaq walk with her on Senior Day, typically reserved for family members, if she declares for the WNBA this year.
Despite LSU’s 18-2 record, they face a challenging game against No. 1 South Carolina, with Reese and the Tigers aiming for victory despite defensive concerns raised by head coach Kim Mulkey.
Shaquille O’Neal has consistently demonstrated his willingness to support fellow athletes in various ways.
