According to NBA insider Jovan Buha of The Athletic, Trae Young, the point guard for the Atlanta Hawks, has been a long-standing target of interest for the Los Angeles Lakers. Young, who even attended two Lakers games during the 2023 playoffs, is a client of Omar Wilkes, who also represents Lakers stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Young secured a substantial five-year, $215.2 million rookie maximum extension with the Hawks in August 2021. He’s a two-time NBA All-Star known for his impressive averages of 26.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 10.2 assists per game in the previous season. His shooting percentages were also noteworthy at 42.9% from the field, 33.5% from beyond the arc, and 88.6% from the free-throw line.
“Trae hasn’t requested a trade from the Hawks,” the NBA source said. “I want to make that clear. He likes playing with Dejounte Murray. He can see what Quin Snyder brings to the table. But if the Hawks decide to tear this thing down and start fresh, he’s definitely open to going to Los Angeles and playing with LeBron and AD.”
In the 2022-23 season, Young’s performance ranked him ninth in the NBA for total points, tenth in points per game, first in total assists, and second in assists per game. However, despite his individual success, the Hawks faced disappointment as they were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the first round of the 2023 playoffs in six games.
Although Trae Young has not formally requested a trade from the Hawks, sources have reported that he is “open” to the possibility of being traded to the Lakers in the future if the Hawks decide to rebuild their team. This willingness to join the Lakers and play alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis has been noted.
It’s worth mentioning that the Lakers faced a challenging postseason, getting swept by the Denver Nuggets in the 2023 Western Conference Finals. Nevertheless, the Lakers’ front office made some notable moves, including re-signing D’Angelo Russell, Austin Reaves, and Rui Hachimura, as well as acquiring Gabe Vincent, Jaxson Hayes, Cam Reddish, and Taurean P.
