ESPN and YES Network broadcaster Michael Kay is openly expressing doubts about CBS Sports’ decision to remove longtime NFL analysts Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms from their lineup.
Esiason and Simms saw their contracts expire without renewal recently, with recently retired NFLers Matt Ryan and JJ Watt stepping in to fill their roles.
However, considering their years of dedicated service, Kay, who has been a New York Yankees broadcaster since 1992, questions the abruptness of CBS’s move to sideline the veteran duo.
“Boomer’s been there 22 years. Phil’s [been there] 26 years. And you know, I hope CBS buttoned everything up.
‘Because if you’re getting rid of guys just because of their age, you’re going to get yourself in trouble. Can’t fire somebody because of their age.”

He later said, “I guess they’re going to have to work around it because isn’t it strange that the two guys that are older got fired now?”
“They could say, well, James Brown’s in the seventies, we’re bringing him back, different job.”
Esiason recently commented on his departure from CBS Sports, and sounded very grateful.
“More [the network’s] decision than maybe mine,’ Esiason, 63, said.
“I had been there for 22 years. The guy who hired me back in 2001 was a guy by the name of Sean McManus, who was the CBS Sports Chairman…”
“I never in my wildest dreams it would have lasted 22 years. With all the people that I’ve worked with CBS and the ”NFL Today” it’s been an amazing run.”
