Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff isn’t exactly thrilled with fellow NFL signal-caller Brock Purdy, especially after the San Francisco 49ers QB set a high-water mark for holiday generosity by gifting his offensive line a fleet of Toyota trucks. Goff says he’ll have a word or two with Purdy when the Lions visit the 49ers next week, poking fun at the grandiose present and hinting that Purdy might have made life tougher for other quarterbacks trying to surprise their linemen during the holiday season.
Purdy’s Extravagant Gesture
Purdy, who is partnered with Toyota, stunned the 49ers’ offensive line with the pricey SUVs despite the team’s disappointing year—one that has left them outside of the playoff picture roughly 12 months after making it to the Super Bowl.
Critics on social media argued Purdy likely received the trucks at little or no cost as part of his endorsement deal, but the gift still stood out as the most noteworthy show of appreciation for an O-line across the league this Christmas.
Goff’s More Low-Key Approach
When asked about his own gifts for the offensive line, Goff admitted he took a simpler route.
“I got my guys a nice package of stuff. We’ll keep it in house. But it’s nice; I hope they’re happy with it,”
he told local radio station 97.1 The Ticket.
However, Goff couldn’t resist calling out Purdy for raising the bar perhaps a bit too high:
“Yeah, I saw what Purdy did too with the trucks, and I thought that was kind of like… ‘Come on, man.’
I might say something to him next week like, ‘You’ve got to relax with that. I know you’ve got the Toyota deal, but you’re buying everyone $50,000 cars; we’ve got issues.’”
Goff also mentioned that finding the right gift for an entire position group—often 10 to 15 linemen—can be challenging, but he still loves continuing this tradition of rewarding the guys who protect him on the field.

Lions vs. 49ers: A Grudge Match
While the gift-giving drama may provide a lighthearted subplot, there’s plenty more on the line when the Lions meet the 49ers. Goff’s squad has amassed a league-leading 13–2 record and stands as a legitimate contender for the Super Bowl this season.
Their next challenge will be a road game in San Francisco, where they hope to avenge last season’s devastating NFC Championship defeat—a game in which the Lions blew a 24–7 halftime lead against the same 49ers team.
“Every week, you’re trying to find an edge of why it means a little extra,”
Goff said.
“Obviously, every win means a lot because it does. But of course, they beat us on the road last year in San Francisco, and we wanted to get that one. Like you said, we lost the NFC championship to San Francisco last year in San Francisco, so there will be plenty of motivation there.”
Looking Ahead
With the Lions currently rolling, Goff and company are focused on securing another statement victory, one that could further solidify their position as a top contender. Meanwhile, the 49ers—who have missed the playoffs—will seek to salvage some pride after a less-than-ideal season.
Whether or not Goff actually confronts Purdy about the extravagant gift remains to be seen, but this match-up already promises to feature more than just a showdown on the field. Between Purdy’s holiday generosity and Goff’s friendly dig, the quarterback duel is taking on an added layer of intrigue.
