Earlier this week, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit shared some heartbreaking news: his beloved service dog, Ben, had passed away. The announcement touched the hearts of many fans, as Ben was a familiar presence to those who followed Herbstreit’s journey on and off the screen.
“This is really hard to write but so many of you have loved and cared about Ben that I wanted to let you know,” Herbstreit began his emotional post. “We found out today that the cancer had spread throughout Ben’s organs, and there was nothing left we could do—we had to let him go. I’ve had dogs my whole life, but Ben was one of a kind. He was smart, loving, gentle, patient, inquisitive, and welcoming to everyone. Always a big smile and a soft tail wag. He and I could communicate… he and I understood each other and had each other’s backs.”
Herbstreit went on to describe just how much Ben meant to him, emphasizing their bond and the special companionship Ben provided over the past decade. “He was with me more than anyone, whether at home or traveling with me for work. Such an easygoing companion. It’s a hard day, but he will live within all of us forever. God, please bless his majestic soul, and thank you for putting him in my life for the last 10 years—a true blessing. Love you, Ben.”
The passing of Ben has undoubtedly been a difficult adjustment for Herbstreit, who admitted that processing the loss has been a real challenge.
However, Herbstreit has decided not to take a break from his work, perhaps finding solace in the routine and support from his colleagues and fans. College football fans across the country have rallied together to show their support for the Herbstreit family during this tough time.
Many have sent messages of love and sympathy, acknowledging the bond Herbstreit shared with Ben and how much Ben meant to the larger “College GameDay” community.
Despite the sadness, there was a touching moment of joy this weekend on “College GameDay.” Roughly 30 minutes before the show kicked off on Saturday, LSU reporter Koki Riley shared a heartwarming video of Herbstreit on set, accompanied by one of his new puppies.
The sight of Herbstreit holding the puppy seemed to lift spirits, both on set and for viewers at home.
The crowd in Baton Rouge showed their love, chanting, “We love Ben,” as Herbstreit held the puppy. He thanked the fans for their kind gesture, visibly moved by the outpouring of support from those who appreciated Ben’s presence over the years.
College football fans across the country expressed their hope that the new puppy could bring some joy and comfort to Herbstreit during this difficult time. Many took to social media to share their thoughts, with one fan writing, “This actually makes my heart happy.” Another commented, “We will always miss Ben. Life goes on. Bittersweet. Dogs are the best.” A third fan noted, “Awww, Kirk must have really needed that. What a sweet guy he is. The new pup seems younger and a lot more curious. Ben was so chill, but I know he made sure he left his family in good paws.”
The tribute to Ben and the introduction of the new puppy made for an emotional segment on “College GameDay.” Ben was a beloved part of the set, often seen by Herbstreit’s side, and he brought an additional layer of warmth and excitement to the show. For many fans, seeing Herbstreit with his new puppy provided a sense of continuity and healing, even as they mourned the loss of Ben.
The bond between Kirk Herbstreit and his service dog was something that resonated with viewers, and the messages of support show just how much Ben was adored by the community.
Our thoughts are with the Herbstreit family during this difficult time, and we hope that their new furry companion will bring them comfort and happiness as they navigate life without Ben. Rest in peace, Ben—you were truly one of a kind, and you will be dearly missed.
