Team USA’s star player, Kevin Durant, showcased his enduring prowess at the 2024 Paris Olympics, proving that he still has plenty of gas left in the tank.
However, even a legendary athlete like Durant is aware that the twilight of his basketball career is approaching.
With an impressive 17 NBA seasons behind him, Durant has started to ponder the inevitable—retirement. The four-time Olympic gold medalist opened up about his thoughts on the subject during a candid conversation on Sunday’s episode of “Raising Fame,” aired by TV One.
“As I get older in the league and the league is getting younger, I tend to think about retirement more,” Durant shared with hosts Sonya Curry and Lucille O’Neal. “I’m like, ‘Should I stop thinking about it? What is that?’ But it creeps in my mind for sure.”
Despite these thoughts, Durant admitted that he hasn’t yet formulated a clear plan for life after basketball. While he has various interests outside of the sport, none have crystallized into a specific path forward. What he does know, however, is that he intends to “stay around the game” in some capacity.

Durant also acknowledged that stepping away from the game would be a “huge, huge transition” for him, a sentiment shared by many athletes nearing the end of their careers.
At 36 years old, Durant continues to defy Father Time. His performance during the last NBA season was nothing short of remarkable, averaging 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game while shooting 52.3% from the field and 41.3% from three-point range. His unique combination of size and shooting ability suggests that he could extend his career for several more years if he chooses to.
While it’s uncertain how much longer Durant will grace the basketball court, it’s clear that he’s already laying the groundwork for life beyond the game. Shortly after the Paris Olympics, Durant began exploring opportunities off the court, hinting at the next chapter in his storied career.
