So you’re saying there’s a chance.
The possibility of Billy Donovan making a transition from the NBA back to the college basketball scene as the next head coach for Kentucky is gaining traction.
College basketball expert Jeff Goodman recently shared insights suggesting a noticeable shift in the likelihood of this happening. Previously viewed as a long shot, with chances between 0-10%, Goodman now estimates Donovan’s odds of taking the Kentucky helm are around 25-30%.
“I’ve talked to people close to Billy Donovan this morning. A couple days ago, I would’ve said the odds of him returning to college were 0-10 percent,” Goodman said. “Now I’d say they’re 25-30 percent. Is [Kentucky athletic director] Mitch Barnhart willing to wait a week?”

Donovan, who has been at the helm of the Chicago Bulls since 2020, finds himself at a potential career crossroads as the Bulls approach the NBA’s play-in tournament. A quick exit from the tournament could open the door for Donovan to contemplate a return to college basketball, where he previously achieved significant success.
When questioned about any interest from Kentucky, Donovan affirmed his commitment to the Bulls, stating he had not been in contact with anyone regarding the Kentucky position and was fully focused on his current role. However, the dynamic nature of coaching careers leaves room for speculation about a future shift in his stance.
A move to Kentucky would be significant, not only for Donovan but for the Wildcats as well. His impressive tenure at Florida, highlighted by two national championships and seven Elite Eight appearances, speaks volumes about his coaching pedigree and the potential impact he could have on Kentucky’s basketball program.
