Kay Adams got more than she bargained for when former NFL quarterback Matt Ryan dropped an unexpected F-bomb during his appearance on her “Up & Adams” show on Friday. The surprise came as Ryan shared a candid and humorous story about his pregame routine, which included a memorable text from his wife, Sarah.
Ryan, the 2016 NFL MVP who retired from football in April, opened up about the ritual he followed before each game. For nearly 15 years, his wife would send him the same motivating message before he took the field. What Adams didn’t expect was the colorful language that was part of that message.
“My wife used to send me the same pregame text for like basically 15 years, and I would check it after we would come in from the first warmups [before games],” Ryan recounted. “It was very simple. It said, ‘Do your best, f–k the rest.’”
Ryan’s revelation left Adams both amused and delighted. The blunt but supportive message from Sarah Ryan had clearly become an essential part of Matt’s pregame routine, grounding him before the intensity of the game.
“Oddly enough, it was one of those things — for me, it kind of just brought you down,” Ryan explained. “You were hearing from your wife, the person that you are closest with. And you knew she was in it with you too — and whether it was good, bad, or indifferent, however the game was going to shake out, it was all going to be good when you get home.”

Ryan went on to describe how he would then go out during pregame warmups to locate where his family was sitting in the stadium, ensuring everyone was settled before he fully immersed himself in the game.
Adams couldn’t hold back her laughter as Ryan recounted the story, particularly when he casually mentioned the F-bomb. “Well, we had an F-bomb already. Anybody have that on their bingo card for today?” she joked, addressing those present in the studio. “I’m sure the events team is thrilled with us right now.”
Later, Adams took to social media to share her reaction to the unexpected moment, tweeting, “2 minutes into our chat I got a Matt Ryan F-bomb. Unexpected. Delighted.”
Ryan, who enjoyed a distinguished career with four Pro Bowl selections and an All-Pro nod, recently transitioned into a new role as a studio analyst with CBS Sports. He joined the network in April and is set to appear on “The NFL Today,” filling the shoes of longtime hosts Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason.
The candid moment on Adams’ show provided a glimpse into the lighter side of Ryan’s life and his close relationship with his wife, adding a personal touch to his otherwise illustrious professional legacy. As Ryan settles into his new role at CBS, moments like these remind fans why he was not only a great player but also one of the more relatable figures in the NFL.
