NBA stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown were spotted at the Dallas Mavericks’ third game of the Conference Finals this week.
Mahomes, originally from Dallas, is a well-known Mavericks fan, frequently attending games. With the Mavericks leading the series 3-0, they are inching closer to contending for the NBA championship, although challenges remain.
Amidst this, Kansas City’s mayor, Quinton Lucas, seized the moment to advocate for bringing an NBA team to Kansas City. He retweeted a photo of Mahomes at the game with a caption that expressed his enthusiasm: “Love to see it. Bring the Association back home to Kansas City and you’ll get KC folk all the time.”
Kansas City has been without a professional basketball team since the Kansas City Kings, who originated as the Cincinnati Royals, moved to Sacramento in 1985 to become the Sacramento Kings.
There is a strong local desire to revive professional basketball in Kansas City, especially with the NBA considering expansion. However, it seems more likely that new teams would be placed in Las Vegas and Seattle instead.
Mahomes, a significant advocate for Kansas City sports, is reportedly interested in helping bring an NBA team to the area, according to Heavy.com. Already involved in local sports through investments in soccer and baseball, Mahomes could potentially contribute to a basketball initiative.
Nonetheless, securing an NBA franchise involves overcoming substantial financial hurdles, requiring billionaire-level investment—a significant challenge even for one of the world’s top athletes.
