New team, new number for Justin Fields.
Justin Fields is gearing up for a fresh start with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and part of that fresh start includes a new jersey number. After spending three seasons with the Chicago Bears wearing No. 1, Fields is making the switch to No. 2 as he begins his journey with the Steelers.
Russell Wilson will continue to wear No. 3, while Kyle Allen, the team’s third-string quarterback, has opted for No. 4.

Although the Steelers haven’t officially retired No. 1, they haven’t assigned it to any player for decades. The last player to wear it during a regular-season game was kicker Gary Anderson back in 1994.
Fields has a history of wearing No. 1 at both Georgia and Ohio State, but his move to No. 2 aligns with his anticipated role on Pittsburgh’s quarterback depth chart.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has indicated that Wilson is currently in the lead for the starting quarterback position, describing him as being in the “pole position.” However, Tomlin is excited about Fields’ potential and talent, especially given the opportunity for him to learn from a seasoned veteran like Wilson.
Fields achieved an 86.3 quarterback rating in his third season with the Bears. However, Chicago’s decision to trade him stemmed from the opportunity to draft USC quarterback Caleb Williams, who is considered a generational talent.
While Fields may initially find himself behind Wilson on the depth chart, his presence promises to add intrigue to the quarterback competition during the upcoming summer months.
