The stars finally aligned for a Bears victory, marking their first win in nearly a year.
Justin Fields and D.J. Moore dedicated the Chicago Bears’ inaugural win of the season on Thursday night to the memory of the late Dick Butkus, one of the franchise’s all-time greats.
Fields, speaking after the 40-20 triumph over the Washington Commanders, offered his condolences to Butkus’ family and expressed the significance of the win, which had been long-awaited. He emphasized that Butkus, a true Bears legend, will forever hold a special place in the team’s history. Fields stated, “Condolences to his family,” Fields said after the 40-20 win over the Washington Commanders, according to Chris Bumbaca of USA Today. “It just means a lot, tonight, getting the win – first win in a long time. So, Bears legend, he’ll never be forgotten. We played for him tonight. So, this one’s for him tonight.”
Fields also revealed that the Bears’ players were unaware of Butkus’ passing until a moment of silence was observed before the game. The news of the legendary linebacker’s sudden death in his sleep earlier that day came as a surprise to them.

“We actually found out about it when we saw it on the screen,” Fields shared, recalling the moment of revelation among the team.
Meanwhile, D.J. Moore, who delivered an exceptional performance with eight catches for 230 yards and three touchdowns, also paid tribute to Butkus following the game.
This victory put an end to the Bears’ 14-game losing streak, a period during which they had consistently allowed their opponents to score at least 25 points in each game, setting an all-time high for the franchise.
Despite Fields’ completion rate of just 51.7% against the Commanders, he managed to throw for 282 yards and four touchdowns without any interceptions. This marked his first game without throwing an interception since Week 16 of the previous season.
