While the Chicago Bears were immersed in football history in Canton, Ohio, last week, one of their players, safety Jonathan Owens, was witnessing a different kind of historic moment in Paris.
Owens traveled to the French capital to support his wife, the legendary gymnast Simone Biles, as she added to her already impressive medal tally at the Paris Olympics.
Upon his return to Halas Hall, Owens proudly displayed his collection of Olympic pins, souvenirs from his unforgettable trip. Reflecting on the experience, he shared his admiration and joy for Biles’ achievements.
“I was overjoyed for her, all of her accomplishments, and just being a face for gymnastics,” Owens said. “She became the most decorated American gymnast ever, so it was amazing to be there and witness that.”
Owens expressed particular pride in Biles’ resilience.
After withdrawing from several events in the previous Olympics due to mental health struggles, Biles faced significant challenges but came back stronger, even competing through an injury this year.
“My wife’s a warrior,” Owens declared. “Her pain tolerance, the way she goes out there and looks graceful, people don’t really understand the battles she’s fighting. She truly is incredible.”

Despite his absence from the Bears’ practices and a game, Owens stayed connected with his team. Equipped with his team iPad, he kept up with the playbook and communications from the coaches.
He even managed to watch the Hall of Fame Game against the Texans live, despite the 2 a.m. kickoff time in Paris.
Owens’ dedication to both his wife and his team highlights his commitment and resilience. Balancing support for Biles on the global stage and maintaining his responsibilities with the Bears, Owens exemplifies the spirit of an athlete dedicated to both family and sport.
