An unexpected candidate has risen in the rankings to potentially be selected second overall in this year’s NFL Draft.
The draft excitement kicks off this Thursday, with former USC standout Caleb Williams predicted to be the first pick by the Chicago Bears, following their decision to move on from Justin Fields.
JJ McCarthy, celebrated for leading the Michigan Wolverines to a national championship earlier this year, has seen a notable shift in his draft odds as of Sunday. Initially listed at 20/1, his odds improved first to 17/1 and then further to 11/1 on FanDuel Sportsbook.

The Washington Commanders, who hold the No. 2 pick, are widely expected to choose Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels. Despite rumors of Daniels’ reluctance to play in Washington, the possibility of the Commanders opting for McCarthy remains a surprise, particularly as he wasn’t previously discussed as a likely No. 2 pick until this recent change in odds.
Such fluctuations in draft odds are typical as the event approaches each year, yet McCarthy’s ascent is not without justification. The 21-year-old quarterback guided the Wolverines to a perfect 15-0 season, achieving their first championship victory since 1997. Although he wasn’t the central focus of Coach Jim Harbaugh’s predominantly run-oriented offense, McCarthy displayed solid leadership and efficiency, completing 72.4 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns.
McCarthy also proved his versatility on the ground, amassing 632 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns over his three years with Michigan. His approach to the game and leadership qualities have made him highly regarded among NFL scouts, one of whom even compared his potential in a pass-first offense to that of Joe Burrow.
