Jimmy Garoppolo has left the San Francisco 49ers and joined the Las Vegas Raiders.
Now that he is no longer with his previous team, he can openly discuss certain topics.
Recently, Garoppolo shared his thoughts on the 49ers trading up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Trey Lance with the third pick.
According to Garoppolo, the situation was uncomfortable and challenging, even more so than the past year.
Despite the difficulties, he appreciated the support from his teammates in the locker room.
Garoppolo expressed his admiration for the tight-knit group that endured many challenges together over the years.
“Yeah, the (2021 season) was real awkward,” Garoppolo told Mike Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle. “That was tougher than this past year, honestly. You’re always gonna be dealt a hard hand at some point, and you’ve just got to make the best of it, and that’s what I’ve tried to do. That was a hard time. But I had some good people around me to lean on.
“The brothers in the locker room, those guys played a big role. I don’t think the fans always saw all that stuff, but those guys really picked me up when I was down sometimes.
“That’s why I love those guys in the locker room. All the crap that we went through for four to five years, whatever it was, we all stayed together in the locker room, and I thought that’s what made us such a tight group.”
The Las Vegas Raiders believed they had addressed their quarterback position by signing Garoppolo in free agency.
However, he is still recovering from a surgery in March to repair a broken left foot he sustained last season. This injury kept Garoppolo out for the rest of the season and has been a recurring issue throughout his time in the Bay Area.
Unfortunately, he now faces the same problem with his new team.
During his tenure with the 49ers, Garoppolo missed a total of 31 regular-season games due to various injuries, including a torn ACL in 2018 and a broken ankle in 2020.
Despite his injury history, the Raiders signed him to a lucrative three-year, $72.5 million contract with significant guarantees. The team is hopeful that Garoppolo can stay healthy and guide them to a successful playoff run this year.
