Jimmy Butler, the Miami Heat star currently facing trade rumors, is now grappling with an intense off-court battle: a contentious paternity dispute with his ex-girlfriend, Kaitlin Nowak. The dispute centers around the custody and financial arrangements for their three children—Rylee, 5, Brayan, 2, and Kian, 1.
The 35-year-old NBA standout recently filed a motion seeking modifications to their previous custody agreement established in November 2023. That agreement granted joint custody and required Butler to pay Nowak $10,000 per month for a nanny on a “temporary basis.” However, Butler now argues that this arrangement is outdated and unnecessary given changes in the children’s circumstances, such as Rylee starting school and Brayan being enrolled in preschool or childcare.
In his motion, Butler claims to already pay $55,000 in monthly child support to Nowak and accuses her of being “unemployed and refusing to seek employment.” He contends that additional nanny expenses are unwarranted, especially given the substantial financial support he is already providing.
Butler Seeks Accountability for Child Support Funds
The court filing suggests that if Nowak claims she cannot afford a nanny despite the significant child support payments, Butler is entitled to a detailed accounting of how the funds are being used. The motion also raises the possibility of appointing a guardian ad litem to oversee expenditures related to the children.
“Child support is intended for the benefit of the children and only the children,” Butler’s attorney, Brian Karpf, said in a statement to the Daily Mail. “There is no justification for additional expenses here.” Karpf further emphasized that Butler is “a good dad” who remains dedicated to the care and well-being of his children.

Nowak’s Position
Nowak has reportedly insisted that Butler continue funding a nanny, arguing that such support is necessary for the children’s care. Her attorney, Paul Leinoff, stated that she intends to respond to Butler’s motion through her own legal filings, which will likely shed more light on her perspective.
The couple’s 2023 custody agreement, which remains confidential and sealed, was initially intended to be a private resolution. However, the dispute has now become a public matter as the two struggle to find common ground.
Butler’s Financial Standing
Butler is in the midst of a lucrative four-year, $184 million contract extension signed in 2021, which nets him $49 million this year alone. Despite his immense earnings, the player appears focused on ensuring that his child support payments are being used solely for their intended purpose.
A Complex History
Butler and Nowak reportedly began their relationship in 2019 but never went public or formalized their union. The court filings also confirm that the two were never married. Their private life had remained largely under the radar until this legal battle brought their personal issues into the spotlight.
Butler Balances On- and Off-Court Pressures
The paternity battle adds another layer of complexity to Butler’s already challenging season, as trade rumors swirl around the Heat star’s future.
Known for his intense dedication on the court, Butler now faces the additional pressure of navigating a high-stakes legal dispute while maintaining focus on his basketball career.
While both parties appear committed to their children, the path forward remains uncertain. With emotions running high and financial stakes significant, the court’s eventual decision will likely have a lasting impact on Butler, Nowak, and their three children.
