The Big Ten conference has initiated communication with the NCAA regarding its investigation into Michigan’s sign-stealing, and it appears that punitive measures from the conference could be on the horizon.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel discussed this development on GameDay this morning, suggesting that if the Big Ten takes action, Michigan’s head coach Jim Harbaugh is the likely focal point of any potential penalties.
“The most likely scenario here is some type of suspension for Jim Harbaugh,” Thamel said. “I wouldn’t expect anything to happen today before the kickoff against Purdue at 7:30, but in the upcoming days, I would expect that we’re going to find out whether or not the Big Ten will punish Jim Harbaugh, what that will be and how long that suspension would be potentially.”
Thamel’s report has prompted reactions from Michigan fans and other social media users.
Some fans from Penn State raised questions about the potential length of the suspension and suggested banning Michigan from postseason play for multiple seasons of cheating.
On the brighter side, one optimistic Michigan fan expressed confidence in the team’s coaching staff, even without Harbaugh, and suggested that the current assistants, Minter and Moore, could step up if necessary.

Another fan predicted a drawn-out process leading to a two-game suspension for Harbaugh, while someone else labeled the entire situation as a “farce” and alleged that it was a form of revenge against Harbaugh for his criticism of the NCAA.
Connor Stalions, the staff member at the center of the sign-stealing controversy, resigned from his position after previously receiving a suspension without pay. Stalions has maintained that Harbaugh had no knowledge of his actions, but it appears that the Big Ten is skeptical of this claim.
This recent bout of controversy might push Harbaugh to consider an NFL coaching job.
