The National Championship head coach explained his reason for leaving the University of Michigan to return to the NFL and coach the Chargers.
“It was tough,” Harbaugh said. “I was torn. My wife and kids (were too). I love Michigan. But I love the NFL, too, and there’s no Lombardi Trophy in college football. I’ve got so many sands left in the hourglass, and I want to take a crack at that. There’s no better place to do it than with the Los Angeles Chargers.”
Harbaugh left the San Francisco 49ers to coach at his alma mater, Michigan, following the 2014 season. His time there culminated with a National Championship after he led the Wolverines to a victory over the Washington Huskies last year.
His time with Michigan was marred in 2023 with an in-season suspension due to a cheating scandal that is being investigated.
