According to sources informed by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the New York Jets explored the possibility of trading for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford when their pursuit of former Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers hit a roadblock.
Before quarterback Aaron Rodgers expressed his interest in joining the Jets in March, the New York team was unsure of Rodgers’ intentions for the 2023 season. Rapoport’s report indicates that at that point, the Rams were resolute in their stance that Stafford was not available, and trade discussions did not progress.
It’s worth noting that the Jets were not the sole interested party inquiring about Stafford, as several other quarterback-needy teams also reached out to the Los Angeles Rams in an attempt to acquire the 35-year-old quarterback, as mentioned by Rapoport.
In 2022, Matthew Stafford’s season was marred by a series of injuries, restricting him to just nine games. During the offseason, he worked through an elbow ailment and suffered a spinal cord injury and a concussion that placed him on injured reserve in December.
As of now, Stafford has made a full recovery. However, the Rams will face the challenge of playing without star wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who was placed on injured reserve earlier in the week due to a hamstring injury.
Matthew Stafford, a former first overall pick, has started 191 career games, boasting a record of 89 wins, 101 losses, and 1 tie. Over his career, he has thrown for 52,082 yards and 333 touchdowns.
