Jerry Jones isn’t stepping aside anytime soon. In a recent interview with veteran Dallas Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill Jr., Jones made it abundantly clear that he has no intention of relinquishing his role as the team’s general manager, firmly stating that he believes no one else is better equipped for the job.
For Cowboys fans, Jones’s steadfast grip on the GM role may evoke mixed feelings. On one hand, there’s comfort in his deep involvement and commitment to the team. On the other, frustration lingers as the Cowboys remain stuck in a playoff rut, having not reached the NFC Championship Game since the mid-1990s. With star players like Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb still waiting on contract extensions, the pressure is mounting. Yet, Jones remains convinced that he is the man to steer the ship.
In a candid and colorful explanation, Jones expressed his unshakable confidence in his ability to lead the team. Speaking to DLLS, a new city-specific website, Jones didn’t mince words about why he believes he’s the best person for the job.
“I’ve done it all. So I have an ordinate amount of confidence that f—, if anybody can figure out how to get this s— done, I can figure out how to get it done,” Jones said. “I’ve been there every which way from Sunday, and have I busted my ass a bunch, a bunch. And there’s nobody living that’s out cutting and shooting that can’t give you a bunch of times they busted their ass. So hell no, there’s nobody that could f—— come in here and do all the contracts … and be a GM any better than I can.”

Jones emphasized that his extensive experience makes him uniquely qualified for the role, and he doesn’t see anyone else who could do it better. He explained his reasoning further:
“I f—— have had hundreds of [bad days],” Jones admitted. “I’m emotional about it sometimes. Well, running this thing, that’s who I want to make the last call. Now, when I can’t f—— think, when I’m old and I can’t even do it… but I’m a long way from not being able to do it too.
“The reason I don’t let somebody else be the GM is because I don’t have anybody that I will let do it to actually do it right. And they’re gonna have to come to me because I know where it is that you’re going to pay for it.”
Jones did acknowledge that he has confidence in his children’s ability to eventually take over, but only in the event of an unforeseen accident. “If I get hit by a car out here tonight,” he quipped, noting that his children would be ready to step in if necessary.
But as long as Jerry Jones is still standing, he plans to be the one making the decisions at the negotiation table. Whether it’s working out a deal with Prescott, finalizing Lamb’s contract, or handling any other crucial decisions for the Cowboys, Jones is determined to remain at the helm. After all, he’s outlasted plenty of players during his tenure, and he’s not planning on stepping down anytime soon.
