In a recent interview on The Dan Patrick Show, Grant Hill discussed the decision to exclude Jaylen Brown from this year’s Team USA squad, opting instead for his teammate Derrick White.
Hill emphasized that the decision was made purely based on basketball considerations, aiming to find the right balance and fit for the team.
“I spoke to his agent. I don’t know if that was before or after things went out on Twitter, but yeah, I think this idea that there’s a conspiracy theory. I always love a good conspiracy theory, but it was really truly a basketball decision and these are tough decisions,” Hill said.
He elaborated on the selection process, explaining the need to find the right pieces for the FIBA competition. “Having gone through this with the FIBA competition, you want to find the right balance and the right pieces on the court that we needed. Not to say that he [Brown] wouldn’t have been good. There’s a lot of guys you can go on, a list of guys who are very capable, and very, very qualified. But you know, for where we were, it was the right decision. Derrick White, I think, will help us as we pursue gold.”
Hill clarified that he had communicated with Brown’s agent and dismissed any conspiracy theories about the selection process. He reiterated that the choice was driven by the specific needs of the team, aiming to create the best possible lineup for success.

In response, Jaylen Brown took to social media, expressing his disappointment with Hill’s comments. He tweeted, “Grant Hill calling me a conspiracy theorist is disappointing. I’ve been a VP since I was 21 years old. I have a great understanding.”
Brown’s reaction highlights his belief that he absolutely deserved to be included in Team USA for the 2024 Olympics.
Coming off arguably his best season, Brown showcased his immense talent and versatility. In the NBA Finals, he averaged 23.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists while shooting an impressive 49.9% from the field.
His performance not only earned him the Finals MVP but also cemented his status as one of the league’s elite players.
Many believe that Brown’s exclusion is a significant oversight, given his stellar performance and leadership qualities.
As the debate continues, it is clear that the decision has sparked controversy and strong opinions among fans and analysts alike.
Whether this will impact Team USA’s performance in the upcoming Olympics remains to be seen, but Brown’s absence will undoubtedly be a talking point throughout the competition.
