Former Villanova Wildcats head coach Jay Wright, known for securing two national championships, is reportedly becoming a surprise contender for the Los Angeles Lakers coaching position.
While Dan Hurley, the current UConn Huskies head coach and favorite for the job, may choose to remain in collegiate sports, Jay Wright is being considered a potential candidate.
NBA insider Marc Stein provided insights into the situation. “Early on, a well-placed insider advised me to keep an eye on Jay Wright as a stealth candidate for the Lakers’ coaching job,” Stein revealed.
Hurley, celebrated for winning consecutive national titles, is set to decide on his future with the Lakers by Monday, as per an ESPN report.

UConn’s coach Dan Hurley conveyed to ESPN that the Los Angeles Lakers presented a “compelling case” and vision for him to lead the team, praising his discussions with Lakers VP and GM Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss. He admitted being extremely impressed and spent Sunday deliberating over what sources describe as a substantial, long-term proposal to transition to the NBA.
Meanwhile, Jay Wright has been active in the broadcasting arena since stepping down from collegiate coaching. The possibility of an NBA coaching role might lure him back to the sidelines.
