On the latest episode of the “New Heights” podcast, Jason Kelce shared a fascinating tidbit about his brother Travis’ football days growing up under their father’s watchful eye.
The recently retired Super Bowl LII champion revealed that their father, Ed, had placed a ban on Travis hurdling over players during games when they were younger. Despite Travis’ eventual success, winning two more rings with the Chiefs than his older brother, Ed was adamant about this restriction.
Hurdling is a permissible move in football if a defender is grounded, but it can result in a foul if attempted over an upright opponent.
‘Our dad banned Travis from hurdling,’ Jason said during this week’s episode.
Directly addressing his father, Travis replied: ‘Dad, those are instincts that got me to where I am. I’m going to f***ing hurdle somebody first game next year and end up on my f***ing head.’
During the podcast episode featuring new Eagles running back Saquon Barkley, Jason recounted their father’s directive, prompting Travis to jestingly respond to their dad, defending his instincts that had served him well on the field. Travis humorously declared his intention to hurdle an opponent in the upcoming season, potentially ending up in a precarious position.

Travis has incorporated hurdling into his gameplay over the years, skillfully evading defenders with this technique, particularly when targeted by Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Highlight reels showcase Travis’ agility as he leaps over adversaries, such as hurdling over 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga in a memorable 2022 play.
However, some instances have resulted in riskier maneuvers, such as a dangerous hurdle during a catch-and-run against the Titans, where Travis was upended by an opponent. Another notable feat was hurdling over the Patriots’ Duron Harmon in 2018, illustrating Travis’ daring athleticism.
In recent news, Travis was seen at a California gym alongside his popstar girlfriend Taylor Swift in Los Angeles, where they reportedly reserved the entire facility for their workout session, inconveniencing other gym-goers.
Meanwhile, Jason is reportedly being courted by ESPN for a potential role on “Monday Night Football” in the upcoming season, signaling a potential shift in his post-retirement endeavors.
