Jason Kelce is relishing the excitement of watching his brother Travis Kelce kick off the football season with a bang. On Saturday, August 17, the Philadelphia Eagles legend took to social media to praise his younger brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, for his standout performance in the NFL preseason.
Jason couldn’t contain his enthusiasm as he reflected on the game and the memorable plays that unfolded.
“Behind the back passes, Carson Wentz touchdown throws, Nate Sudfeld touchdown throws,” Jason wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He went on to say, “This is up there with my most enjoyed preseason games so far,” highlighting the sheer entertainment value of the game.
One of the most talked-about moments of the game came when Travis teamed up with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a daring behind-the-back pass during a matchup against the Detroit Lions. Mahomes, 28, pulled off the trick play by subtly flicking the football behind his back to Travis, who then secured a crucial first down for the team.
Jason was quick to express his admiration for the play, initially reacting in real-time on X with excitement, saying, “This son of a gun actually did it!! Magic Mahomes.” He even shared the video of the moment, ensuring fans could relive the incredible play. Jason’s humor shone through when he added, “Now that it’s been done in the preseason, I got a fever, and I need more cowbell,” referencing the famous Saturday Night Live skit to underscore his enthusiasm.

Mahomes, known for his playful nature, later joked about the move in a video posted on the Chiefs’ Instagram account. “Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run, and then it was kind of a behind-the-back pass, kinda ’cause I was mad,” Mahomes quipped. “Out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass.”
But Jason’s praise didn’t stop with his brother. He also took a moment to acknowledge his former Philadelphia Eagles teammates, Carson Wentz and Nate Sudfeld, both of whom made significant contributions during the same game. Wentz, who now serves as a backup for the Chiefs, connected on a touchdown pass, while Sudfeld, now a quarterback for the Lions, threw a successful touchdown of his own.
Jason and Wentz, 31, shared the field as Eagles teammates from 2016 to 2020, forming a strong bond during their time together. Similarly, Sudfeld and Jason played side by side from 2017 until 2020, making this preseason matchup a reunion of sorts for the former Eagles players.
Despite the thrilling moments and a promising start, the Chiefs narrowly lost to the Lions with a final score of 24-23. However, the excitement of the game and the standout performances made it a preseason game to remember.
The Chiefs will have another chance to shine when they face off against the Chicago Bears in their next preseason game on Thursday, August 22. Fans, including Jason Kelce, will undoubtedly be watching to see what his brother and the rest of the Chiefs have in store.
