When the Detroit Lions acquired Jared Goff in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams after the 2021 season, it was uncertain whether they saw the former No. 1 overall draft pick as a temporary solution or a potential franchise quarterback.
Three years later, it’s clear what Goff has become for the Lions: a franchise cornerstone. Detroit is compensating him accordingly.
The Lions and Goff have agreed to a 4-year, $212 million contract extension that includes $170 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal makes Goff the highest-paid Lions player ever and the second-highest paid player in the NFL on a per-year basis at $53 million.
It’s hard to argue that Goff doesn’t deserve the deal.
After a shaky first season in Detroit, Goff has played excellent football, helping the Lions become a force in the NFC. He has thrown 59 touchdowns against just 19 interceptions over the last two seasons. The Lions went 12-5 last year, won the division, and reached the conference championship game.
This offseason, the Lions also signed Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell to contract extensions. By locking up Goff, the team ensures that their offensive core will remain intact.
