The NBA Draft certainly delivered on its promise, especially for one particular NBA player.
Ja Morant is clearly intrigued and excited by the Memphis Grizzlies’ recent addition to their lineup, following their strategic move in Wednesday’s NBA Draft.
The team utilized their No. 9 overall pick to secure former Purdue center Zach Edey, signaling a significant shift towards prioritizing size and skill on their roster.
This decision marked a remarkable ascent in Edey’s career, transforming him from a potential late second-round pick to a top ten draftee, thanks to his stellar performances as the two-time National College Player of the Year.
Morant’s reaction to acquiring such a towering teammate was shared in a humorous and telling manner on his Instagram Story. He posted a clip from the movie “Rush Hour 3,” where Chris Tucker’s character is dwarfed by the Kung-Fu Giant, drawing a delightful parallel to his own situation.
At 7-foot-4, Edey’s stature is indeed imposing, especially next to the 6-foot-2 Morant. While not as drastic as the height disparity between Tucker and Sun Mingming, who stands at 7-foot-9, the comparison is still strikingly apt.
Edey, who was the leading scorer in the 2023-24 NCAA season, had been attracting considerable attention from various teams, notably another lottery team that showed strong interest before the draft.
However, it was ultimately the Grizzlies who made the decisive move to draft him, thereby providing Morant with a notably large and potentially game-changing new pick-and-roll partner.
This new dynamic duo in Memphis could very well reshape their tactical approach and on-court chemistry in the upcoming seasons.
