Since Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady’s unexpected return in 2022, there’s been a lingering skepticism within the NFL community whenever a star announces their retirement.
Fans, writers, and even fellow players often wonder, is this truly the end? However, defensive end J.J. Watt, aged 35, seems to have firmly closed that chapter of his life.
During his annual charity softball game in Sugar Land, Texas, Watt put an end to any speculation of a potential comeback.
“I’ve had 12 incredible years in this league, and I’m grateful to walk away healthy,” Watt expressed to reporters. “Last year, I told (Houston Texans coach) DeMeco (Ryans), ‘Don’t call me unless it’s absolutely necessary. But if you do, I’ll be there.’
“This year, I won’t even give him that option, because I’m not going to continue training as I have been.”

Watt, widely regarded as the greatest player in the Texans’ brief history, retired after stints with the Arizona Cardinals in 2021 and ’22. His illustrious career boasted five All-Pro selections, five Pro Bowl appearances, and three AP Defensive Player of the Year accolades.
Ryans and Watt shared the field for just one season, back in 2011, a memorable year for the Texans as they clinched their first division title.
