Following a journey that commenced with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2016, an NFL fullback has declared his retirement from professional football.
Derek Watt, after seven seasons in the league, shared his decision in a heartfelt letter on Tuesday.
“Simply a kid from Pewaukee, WI, who had the opportunity to fulfill his childhood dream of playing in the NFL,” he penned. “And now, with immense honor and gratitude, I officially announce my retirement and the culmination of my career… A journey that evolved beyond the game I cherish. The seven years, with two exceptional organizations, 110 career games, and the lifelong friendships and cherished memories I’ve been fortunate to forge have been nothing short of remarkable.
“I exit this incredible game with a heart full of appreciation and contentment, knowing I gave my all each and every day. No shortcuts taken, countless goals achieved along the way. Every moment was worth it.”

Drafted by the Chargers in the sixth round of the 2016 draft, the 31-year-old spent four seasons there before joining the Steelers in 2020.
J.J. Watt, his elder brother and former NFL standout, responded to the news:
“Incredible career. Incredible man. Incredible brother. Couldn’t possibly be more proud.”
Derek participated in 110 NFL games, amassing 71 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. Additionally, he logged 18 receptions for 178 yards and one touchdown.
That leaves only one Watt left in the NFL.
