Previously, the all-time record was held by Courtney Vandersloot, who had 18 assists for the Chicago Sky in a 2020 game against, coincidentally, the Indiana Fever.
Before Vandersloot, the record stood for over two decades, set by Ticha Penicheiro of the Sacramento Monarchs. Penicheiro’s 16-assist game occurred in 1998 against the Cleveland Rockers, a record that has since been matched five times.
In addition to her record-breaking assists, Clark finished the game with an impressive 24 points and six rebounds, showcasing a well-rounded performance. Despite her efforts, the Fever fell short, losing to the Wings 101-93.
Clark came into Wednesday’s game leading the WNBA with an average of 7.8 assists per game, building on her college career at Iowa, where she averaged 8.2 assists per game over four years. Her exceptional playmaking skills have been a hallmark of her game.
Selected as the No. 1 overall pick, Clark overcame a slow start to her professional career and has been dazzling fans with her performances. On Wednesday, she truly embodied the spirit of Magic Johnson with her incredible passing ability, cementing her place in WNBA history.
