Christie Sides is breaking her silence.
The Indiana Fever are making significant changes to their lineup mid-season, a move that has sparked considerable surprise and discussion among fans and analysts alike.
The team recently activated center Damiris Dantas, and in a corresponding move, released guard Celeste Taylor, their No. 15 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
This roster adjustment came unexpectedly, as Fever head coach Christie Sides had not previously indicated that Dantas’ return to the lineup was approaching.
Moreover, Sides had been vocal about her intention to strengthen the team’s defense following a narrow 88-87 loss to the Chicago Sky. The release of Taylor, notably the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year from her time at Ohio State, seemed to contradict this strategy, adding to the shock of her departure.
On June 26, Coach Sides addressed the media, explaining the difficult nature of the decision to waive Taylor. “That was just a really tough choice,” Sides expressed. She elaborated on Taylor’s contributions, praising her for her communicative presence both on the court and off. “Celeste did everything we asked her. She was a great teammate. She talked more than most as a rookie. She just fell really comfortable communicating on the court. And on the bench as well. She was really good about in-huddles.”
Despite Taylor’s apparent fit with the team and her strong defensive skills, Sides described the decision as a “business decision” and one of the hardest parts of managing a professional sports team. “It was really hard to let her go. It was just a business decision. It’s one of the hardest things we have to do in this game,” Sides concluded.

The reaction from the Fever’s fan base has been one of frustration and disappointment, particularly because Taylor, a standout defender named the 2023 ACC Defensive Player of the Year during her last season at Duke, saw very limited playing time with the Fever.
Over her brief tenure, Taylor appeared in only five games, averaging a mere 3.2 minutes per appearance—hardly enough time to demonstrate her potential or make a significant impact on the court.
The fan response has been vocal, with many taking to social media to express their discontent. One fan’s comment encapsulated the general sentiment: “It was absolutely the wrong ‘business’ decision to cut Celeste Taylor and the franchise is gonna find that out. The fan base is still mad. Fans that followed Celeste to the team will be gone. Business decision? You cut the wrong player.”
This situation highlights the often challenging and controversial decisions that sports teams must make in balancing short-term needs with long-term potential, as well as managing team dynamics and financial considerations.
For the Fever, this decision has clearly not sat well with a segment of their supporters, casting a spotlight on the pressures and complexities that come with managing a professional sports roster.
