During his appearance on the “All The Smoke” podcast, Iman Shumpert discussed his time with the Cavaliers during their championship season in 2015-2016.
In this historic season, the Cavaliers became the first team in NBA Finals history to come back and win the series after being down 3-1 against the Warriors.
Shumpert broke down their strategy in defeating the Warriors by revealing that they noticed Stephen Curry wasn’t actively guarding Kyrie Irving.
“We realized Steph wasn’t trying to match up with Kyrie. All we took it as, ‘Oh, you scared of this dude? You scared of buddy?’ So, we just fed him.”
This realization led them to believe that Curry was potentially scared of Irving, which motivated them to feed him the ball. Shumpert also explained how they exploited Curry’s defensive weaknesses by setting screens and forcing him to guard other players like himself.
This tactic created opportunities for double screens, ultimately making it difficult for the Warriors to defend against the talented duo of Irving and Shumpert.
