During a Saturday afternoon game between the Benjamin Mays football team in Atlanta and Douglas County, shocking footage aired on live television revealed an assistant coach apparently delivering a punch to one of his players’ stomachs on the sidelines.
The incident occurred in the first quarter, causing the unidentified player, as reported by SBLive Sports, to bend over in pain and stumble backwards from the impact.

The Atlanta Public Schools system has acknowledged the incident and issued the following statement:
“A lay coach from Mays High School, who is not a classroom instructor, has been apprehended by the police after an incident that occurred during today’s game against Douglas County High School. Based on the video footage from the live broadcast, it appears that the lay coach physically assaulted a player. The adult will be charged with simple battery and will also face administrative charges from the district. Ensuring the safety and well-being of all APS students remains a top priority for the district, and all APS employees are expected to strictly adhere to the highest standard of conduct and professionalism.”
As reported by the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, the coach was immediately escorted away from the sidelines and taken into police custody shortly after the incident occurred.
