Onward and upward—that’s the uplifting message Grete Griffin shared with her husband, Robert Griffin III, following the surprising news of his departure from ESPN.
After the former NFL quarterback was let go by the network, Griffin took to social media to lighten the mood, posting a humorous clip from the movie Friday where John Witherspoon’s character famously asks, “How the hell you going to get fired on your day off?” Grete quickly responded with unwavering support, commenting, “Onto bigger and better things.”
Griffin, a Heisman Trophy winner who played for the Washington Football Team, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens during his NFL career, joined ESPN three years ago. Despite having two years left on his contract, he was part of the network’s recent cost-cutting measures, which also included the departure of “Sunday NFL Countdown” host Sam Ponder.

According to The Athletic, Griffin was earning a substantial seven-figure salary during his time at ESPN. However, earlier this year, he was removed from his role on the network’s “Monday Night Football” pregame show after ESPN brought in retired Eagles center Jason Kelce.
In the wake of his firing, the 34-year-old Griffin expressed his gratitude for his time at ESPN in a heartfelt message to his 2.2 million followers on X (formerly Twitter). “From the broadcast booth to the studio and ESPECIALLY the people many of you never see behind the camera. They are the REAL MVPs and sacrifice so much time with their families just to ensure people like myself in front of the camera even have the opportunity to shine,” Griffin wrote.
He reflected on the experiences he and his family had during his tenure at the network, emphasizing the importance of the fans who have supported him throughout his journey. “There were so many awesome experiences and moments that my family and I will never forget from the last 3 years. What people sometimes fail to realize is none of this is possible without you guys, the FANS. So THANK YOU to everyone who has supported my family through my playing days and broadcast career so far. We love you guys and will continue to seek and defend the truth while telling athletes’ stories the right way.”
Griffin followed up with another post on Friday morning, offering words of wisdom and hope: “When one door closes, another one opens. Trust God on your journey.”
Griffin and Grete, who have been married since 2018, share three daughters together, and Griffin has another daughter from a previous relationship. Their strong bond and Grete’s steadfast encouragement underscore the positive outlook Griffin is maintaining as he embarks on the next chapter of his career. Despite the setback, it’s clear that both Robert and Grete Griffin are looking ahead with optimism, ready for whatever comes next.
