The New York Giants were embracing an opportunity to grow and learn following a disappointing 2023 season.
With hopes of returning to the playoffs in 2024, the Giants aimed to measure themselves against the Detroit Lions — a rising force in the NFC that came within an eyelash of playing in Super Bowl LVIII last season.
However, on the first day of a scheduled two-day joint practice, emotions ran high, leading to a nasty brawl between players from both sides. This incident is just the latest in a tension-filled summer around the NFL.
Monday morning’s brawl appeared to have been prompted by a tussle between the Lions’ All-Pro receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and Giants rookie cornerback Dru Phillips.
The pair seemed more focused on holding each other rather than attempting to make a play on a ball thrown down the sideline by Detroit’s star quarterback Jared Goff.

The altercation occurred early in the first day of the planned two-day joint session at the Giants’ facility in North Jersey.
It’s the second consecutive year that the Giants and the Lions have agreed to practice together. New York offensive lineman Andrew Thomas, one of the team’s best players, was looking forward to the challenge of going up against a Super Bowl contender.
“I remember last year just being out there and competing, and you definitely measure yourself to a team that’s talented like they are,” left tackle Thomas said. “We’re just focused on doing what we can, executing, and like I said, the mentality of being physical, because I think that translates to Sundays.”
Despite the optimistic outlook, Monday’s brawl, which involved several players from both teams, may force the two organizations to reconsider continuing this two-year “tradition” in 2025. The incident highlighted the potential downsides of joint practices, where competitive spirits can sometimes boil over into physical altercations.
As the Giants strive to build a more resilient and playoff-ready team, the lessons learned from such high-intensity encounters could prove invaluable.
However, maintaining a balance between healthy competition and sportsmanship will be crucial in future joint practice sessions.
