On Tuesday night, as Yankees star Gerrit Cole made a noteworthy rehab start for the Double-A Somerset Patriots, it was not just his pitching that captured attention but also a standout moment from the stands.
Amy Cole, Gerrit’s wife, made an impressive catch of a foul ball during the game at TD Bank Ballpark. Amy, a former college softball player at UCLA, was featured in a photo on the Patriots’ X account, proudly displaying the foul ball she caught.
Gerrit Cole, who has been recovering from nerve inflammation and edema in his right elbow, had been on the injured list since the onset of the 2024 season. His outing with the Patriots marked his first minor league appearance since 2016, the same year he and Amy tied the knot.

The event drew a large crowd to the New Jersey ballpark, eager to see Cole back in action, donning his iconic No. 45. He delivered a performance that met his fans’ high expectations, signaling a promising comeback to major league play.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism about Cole’s return. “I feel good,” Cole stated before the Yankees’ subsequent 9-5 victory over the Twins in The Bronx on Wednesday. “We’ll take it start by start, just like we have the whole time… It was a good day yesterday, so I’m very encouraged.”
Boone also commented on Cole’s rehab start, noting he managed to catch a few innings and was impressed by Cole’s performance. “He looked really sharp. Just as far as command of the fastball and getting to where he wanted to get the swing and miss,” Boone said. “The 15 or 20 pitches that I saw looked like Gerrit.”
While it remains to be seen when Cole will make his major league return, he is scheduled to pitch again for the Patriots on Sunday.
