The Dawn Staley backlash continues.
During a recent interview, South Carolina’s esteemed basketball coach, Dawn Staley, shared her thoughts on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports, sparking widespread attention. Staley stated, “I’m of the opinion that if you’re a woman you should play. If you consider yourself a woman and you want to play sports, or vice versa, you should be able to play. That’s my opinion.”
Barbara Ehardt, a former women’s basketball coach and current member of the Idaho House of Representatives, voiced her disappointment with Staley’s remarks.
Having coached at Cal State Fullerton from 2000-2003 before her political career, Ehardt expressed concern over Staley’s stance, particularly in light of the growing prominence of women’s sports.
“We had one of the biggest stages that we’ve ever had in women’s sports,” Ehardt told OutKick. “To have Dawn Staley, on the biggest stage and at a time when we’ve received unprecedented support and following, hem and haw and then say, if they identify as women they should play? I’m terribly disappointed.”
Ehardt critiqued Staley’s position in an interview with OutKick, highlighting the significant attention and support women’s sports have recently garnered.
Staley, who recently celebrated her third national championship win, has yet to comment on Ehardt’s statements. However, it is anticipated that she may address the ongoing conversation surrounding her views in the future.
