Liz Cambage, once a prominent figure in the WNBA, is no longer in the spotlight in the U.S. but continues her career in China following several contentious incidents.
A four-time WNBA All-Star and the league’s 2018 scoring champion, Cambage was known for her combative style on the court. Standing at 6-foot-8, her physical play often didn’t sit well with her opponents or officials, leading to multiple ejections. Off the court, her outspoken nature sometimes caused friction.
Cambage’s career took a dramatic turn following a 2022 incident where she allegedly directed racial slurs at the Nigerian national team during a scrimmage before the Tokyo Olympics. This led to her withdrawal from the WNBA after video footage emerged showing a confrontation during the practice.
Since leaving the WNBA, Cambage has been playing internationally and signed a $1 million contract with the Sichuan Blue Whales in the Women’s Chinese Basketball Association in November. With her help, Sichuan made it to the league finals for the second consecutive year. However, Cambage’s propensity for controversy followed her to China.
During Game 2 of the WCBA Finals, Cambage was ejected after a notably physical game where she scored 30 points but committed two flagrant fouls due to rough play.
