Tiger Woods has crafted a legendary career that will be remembered for generations. However, the past few years have been difficult to witness for fans of the 15-time major champion, as he has struggled to regain his form following a severe leg injury from a 2021 car accident.
In a recent interview, former Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie shared his thoughts on Woods’ current state. He didn’t hold back, expressing his disappointment with Woods’ recent performances.
“I hope people remember Tiger as he was, with the passion and the charismatic aura that surrounded him,” Montgomerie told the Times. “There is none of that now. At Pinehurst, he did not seem to enjoy a single shot, and you think, ‘What the [expletive] is he doing?’ He’s coming to Troon, and he won’t enjoy it there either.”

Montgomerie went on to suggest that Woods should have retired after his emotional appearance at the Open Championship at St. Andrews in 2022.
“Stand on that bridge, start waving, and everyone goes, ‘So, is that it?’ Yeah, it is. It would have been a glorious way to go. The stands were full, the world’s TV cameras—from all continents—were on him, he’s walking up there on his own, tears were in his eyes obviously… you can’t beat that walk.”
The stark reality is that Woods’ days of contending for major championships seem to be behind him. Despite this, Woods has shown no indication that he is ready to step away from the game he loves.
Since his return to the course, Woods has had to adapt to a new reality. The fierce competitor who once dominated the sport is now grappling with physical limitations and the inevitability of aging. His rounds at recent tournaments have been punctuated by moments of visible discomfort and frustration, a far cry from the confident, focused demeanor that once defined him.
Fans and fellow players alike continue to hold out hope for glimpses of the old Tiger, the one who could command a tournament with his sheer will and unparalleled skill. However, as Montgomerie pointed out, those moments are becoming increasingly rare.
Woods’ legacy, however, is firmly cemented.
His influence on the sport of golf is immeasurable, inspiring countless young players and bringing a new level of excitement and visibility to the game. Even if he never wins another tournament, his impact will endure.
The golf world now waits to see what the future holds for Woods. Will he continue to push through the pain and try to compete at the highest level, or will he find a new way to contribute to the sport he loves? One thing is certain: whatever path he chooses, Tiger Woods will always be a figure of immense significance in the world of golf.
