Former New England Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler, celebrated for his pivotal interception in Super Bowl 49, faced a sobering moment when he was arrested for alleged drunk driving in North Providence on March 16.
Initially reported by WPRI, Butler was charged with driving under the influence of liquor, refusing a chemical test, and stopping at a prohibited intersection.
According to a North Providence police report, Butler’s white Mercedes Benz E300 obstructed traffic in the westbound lane of Mineral Spring Avenue, prompting officers to conduct a traffic stop just before 3:30 a.m.
During the stop, Butler purportedly informed officers that he had been at a studio in Providence working on music. Police noted a strong odor of alcohol on his breath, severely bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech.

When questioned about his alcohol consumption, Butler reportedly replied, “Just take me to jail,” according to the police report.
Authorities requested Butler to undergo a series of field sobriety tests, which he declined. He was subsequently booked at police headquarters without incident and was summoned to appear in court on Thursday.
Butler, with a nine-year tenure in the NFL, gained fame for intercepting Russell Wilson at the goal line in Super Bowl 49, clinching the New England Patriots’ fourth title. Earlier this month, he announced his retirement from professional football.
